Prelim compo.
It was a cold and wet Saturday morning. The window panes glistened with snow, and the boughs of the nearby trees shone like molten silver. Little gusts of wind blew across the land, whipping up twirling columns of snow that rose and fell at every fresh gust. The rain had just stopped; what seemed to be a malevolent spirit that threw down heavy buckets of water had apparently decided to pause. There was a peaceful feeling in the surroundings, but the tranquility was about to be shattered.
A cacophony of noises was suddenly heard throughout the countryside as people rushed out from their shabby houses to catch a glimpse of what had appeared in the middle of their field in the wee hours of the morning. It was indeed enthralling to see shining gazebos and tents pitched up so quickly at night when the malevolent spirit was still at work. A well-polished sign that had been perched neatly in the snow read," Welcome to the Annual JJ fair!"
Various fun rides were already in place next to the tents, and the children began to pester their parents to take them to the fair. Alan and Alyssa, two teenagers who lived in the vincity, also joined in the long queue of people who were waiting for their turn to enter the fair.
"Wow...What a long queue we have ahead of us," Alyssa muttered excitedly to Alan. The people were gesticulating wildly at the enormous Ferris wheel that had started to rotate. "I want to have a ride on that," Alyssa grinned childishly. Soon, they were having fun in the noisy grounds, buying various knick knacks and having a go at the game stalls. It was not at all surprising that the countryside people were excited about the fair as it entertained people of all ages and provided great bargains.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang behind Alan and Alyssa. They turned around instinctively and found to their amusement that it was their friend, Audrey, who had popped a balloon behind them mischievously. However, their laughter was short-lived. There was a blinding flash of light as the spirit in the sky awoke from his short nap and threw a bolt of lightning down upon the countryside. Electricity cackled in the air as the powerful sound wave passed through the countryside. Alan, Alyssa and Audrey shut their eyes and used their arms to shield themselves from the blinding light. Upon regaining their composure, they opened their eyes hesitantly and looked around. To their horror, the bolt of lightning had struck the Ferris wheel, which was now wobbling precariously on its side. The people who were on the ride screamed and shouted for help as the three of them stood rooted to the ground, horrified.
The two pieces of metal that held the wheel in place bucked under the pressure and started to break. "Run! Run for your lives!" People screamed and chaos took over. Holding each other's hands tightly, the trio ran in the direction of their homes frantically. As if he were enjoying the chaotic scene, the malevolent spirit decided to call upon torrents of rain. The water cascaded onto the Ferris wheel, adding to the danger posed to the trapped passengers.
Gazing intently at the scene in the safety of their homes, the three friends shivered at the thought of what would have happened if they were on the Ferris wheel at that unfortunate moment. Rescue operations were soon in place despite the heavy downpour, and miraculously, everyone escaped unharmed. Perhaps the malevolent spirit was merely having some fun toying with the people, or perhaps it was purely sheer luck that ensured the safety of the people. However, one thing was for sure. The Annual fair was over.
